Beyond the Empathy Games 101: Digging Deep into Empathy, Ethics, and Design with Kelli Dunlap
Games which provide players the opportunity to experience profound and deeply emotional experiences are often labeled as “empathy games.” While the goal of crafting these kinds of experiences is frequently to evoke feelings of connection, there remains significant moral and ethical considerations. Is asking someone to experience another person’s trauma permissible in the name of empathy? How are we thinking about the ethics around creating immersive, potentially traumatic experiences? This talk will delve into the psychological construct of empathy, discuss how empathy maps to the design process, and share core questions to consider when designing in the name of empathy. Speakers: Kelli Dunlap (Director of Mental Health Research and Design, iThrive Games)
Design challenges and solutions: Mental health representation in games
This talk will explore the ways in which mental health representation in the media, and games specifically, impact the larger discussion around mental health and mental illness. The aim of this talk is to provide a foundation for understanding how mental illness is represented in digital games and a new perspective for thinking critically about representation on mental illness in games. The talk will conclude with a presentation of a dimensional model of mental illness representation in games, which is a new framework for assessing video game content in this area. GAconf USA 2022
Do No Harm: Ethically Designing Emotionally Heavy Games
There is no topic games can't tackle, but when game content intentionally evokes intense emotional experiences game developers have a duty to minimize harm. Whether a game explores vulnerable populations or discusses topics traditionally considered stigmatized (i.e. mental illness) or traumatic (i.e. assault), game designers must actively do right by the player. In this talk, clinical psychologist and professor of game design Dr. Kelli Dunlap adapts psychological ethical standards to create guidelines for game designers working on emotionally heavy content.
